Even the most organized move can leave essential items behind. When you’re focused on the big things like furniture, boxes, and trucks, it’s easy to forget the smaller stuff you’ll wish you had.
Worried that moving the big things will get in your way? Hiring experienced movers you can trust for your residential move can give you the time to focus on the details. Contact the Unique Movers team to learn more about rates, packing tips, and more. You can fill out our contact form or call (320) 237-3776.
1. Chargers & Cables
Phone chargers, laptop cords, and other electronic accessories often get left plugged into walls or buried in drawers. Do a final sweep of all outlets and surge protectors.
2. Important Documents
Passports, birth certificates, medical records, and tax files should travel with you, not on the truck. Keep them in a labeled, secure folder you carry personally.
3. Prescription Medications
Whether it’s a daily dose or an emergency inhaler, don’t forget to pack all medications separately and keep them easily accessible.
4. Hidden Valuables
Cash tucked in drawers, jewelry stashed in boxes, or spare keys hidden “just in case” are easy to miss and hard to recover. Take inventory of these items before moving day.
5. Shower Curtain & Bath Essentials
You won’t want to shower without them the first night in your new place. Include a shower curtain, liner, rings, and a few towels in your essentials bag.
6. Items at the Dry Cleaner or Storage Unit
Dry cleaning, shoe repairs, or seasonal items in storage can fall off the radar. Make a checklist of all off-site belongings to pick up before moving day.
7. Wall Hooks & Hardware
Curtain rods, wall anchors, and TV mounting brackets are commonly left behind. If it’s screwed into the wall or holding something up, it might be forgotten unless you plan ahead.
8. Spare Keys & Garage Door Openers
You’ll want them for both your old place (to give to the new owners) and your new one. Store them in a labeled envelope in your glove box or essentials bag.
9. Plants
It’s surprisingly common to forget houseplants on patios, porches, or tucked in corners. Water them ahead of time and plan space in your vehicle to transport them safely.
10. Trash & Recycling Bins
Large, outdoor bins are expensive to replace and often missed when they’re stored outside or behind a garage. Empty and clean them before the move, and don’t leave them behind! Unless, that is, they belong to the waste management company. Then, you’ll need to arrange a swap.
