Gather The Right Tools And Supplies

Before moving a pool table, make sure you have the proper equipment. Trying to improvise with the wrong tools can lead to damage or injury.

Common tools used for pool table moves include:

• Socket wrench or drill
• Staple remover
• Moving blankets
• Furniture dollies
• Heavy-duty straps
• Plastic bags for hardware

Keeping bolts and small parts organized during disassembly will make the reassembly process much easier later.

Disassemble The Pool Table

Most pool tables need to be taken apart before they can be safely moved. Start by removing the table’s pockets and rails. After that, carefully detach the felt from the slate surface.

Once the felt is removed, the slate pieces underneath can be unscrewed from the frame. Slate is extremely heavy and brittle, so each section should be lifted carefully and set aside on padded surfaces.

Protect The Slate & Frame

The slate playing surface is the most delicate and valuable part of a pool table. Each slate piece should be wrapped in moving blankets or thick padding to prevent cracking or chipping during transport. Make sure to always carry the slate pieces on end, never flat.

The table frame, legs, and rails should also be wrapped with blankets or stretch wrap to prevent scratches and dents.

Move The Pieces Carefully

Even when disassembled, pool table components are very heavy. Slate pieces can weigh hundreds of pounds each. Use furniture dollies and lifting straps to move the pieces safely, and always lift with multiple people. Make sure to always carry the slate pieces on end, never flat.

Planning a clear path out of the home and into the moving truck will make the process much smoother.

Reassemble & Level The Table

Once the pool table reaches its new location, it must be carefully reassembled and leveled. The slate pieces are placed back onto the frame and aligned before the felt and rails are reinstalled.

Leveling is critical to ensure the table plays correctly. Even small uneven areas can affect how balls roll across the surface.
