Moving day is coming, and you’re staring down your washer, fridge, and stove like they’re a boss level in a video game. Large appliances can be some of the trickiest and riskiest items to move. If done wrong, you could end up with damaged floors, dented appliances, or even a serious injury. But don’t sweat it! With the right steps and a little planning, you can safely move your appliances and keep things running smoothly in your new home.

Step 1: Prep Before You Pack
Before touching a single plug, start with a checklist for each appliance. Every machine has different needs.
What you’ll need:
- Appliance dolly with straps
- Furniture sliders or moving blankets
- Packing tape and zip ties
- Bubble wrap or foam padding
- Owner’s manual (download online if you lost it)
Pro Tip: Clean each appliance thoroughly to avoid transporting grease, crumbs, or mildew into your new home.
Step 2: Unplug & Disconnect Safely
Fridge/Freezer
- Unplug 24 hours in advance to allow defrosting.
- Remove all food and clean the shelves.
- Tape doors shut and secure cords.
Washer/Dryer
- Disconnect water and power lines.
- Drain any remaining water from hoses.
- For gas dryers, have a pro handle the disconnection.
Dishwasher
- Disconnect power and water lines.
- Allow the unit to dry.
- Wrap the hose in a towel and secure with zip ties.
Stove/Oven
- Electric: Unplug and tape down elements.
- Gas: Turn off the gas valve and hire a licensed technician.
Step 3: Protect & Pack Properly
Once disconnected and cleaned, it’s time to wrap each appliance with care:
- Use moving blankets or bubble wrap to protect surfaces.
- Secure doors and lids with bungee cords or moving straps (never use tape directly on the appliance, as it may damage the finish).
- Wrap cords and hoses, then tape them to the back of the unit.
Step 4: Lift the Right Way
Appliances are heavy and awkward. Keep these strategies in mind:
- Use a sturdy appliance dolly (with straps).
- Enlist a second person to help balance the load.
- Be sure to lift with your legs, not your back.
- Avoid dragging heavy appliances, as they can damage your floors or the unit itself.
Step 5: Loading into the Truck
- Place appliances upright and near the front of the truck.
- Use tie-downs or straps to keep them from shifting.
- Avoid stacking items on top of them.
Pro Tip: Load appliances last so they come out first at your new place, making it easier to set up your kitchen and laundry right away.
Step 6: Set Up at the New Home
Before plugging in:
- Check floors are level and dry.
- Reconnect water, power, and gas (if needed).
- Let the fridge sit unplugged for 3 hours if transported on its side. This prevents compressor damage.
If anything seems off, it’s best to bring in a technician for evaluation.
