How to Safely Move Fragile Items

Use the Right Supplies

The foundation of safe packing starts with having the right tools. Fragile items need extra support, so skip the worn-out grocery store boxes and invest in high-quality moving supplies. This includes double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, foam sheets, and heavy-duty tape. Specialty boxes, such as dish packs and glass dividers, offer added structure that’s well worth the extra cost. Using the proper materials helps reduce vibration, cushion impact, and create a more stable load overall.

Wrap Items Individually

Every fragile item should be treated as if it were making the journey alone. Wrap each dish, glass, or figurine separately using packing paper, foam sleeves, or bubble wrap. Secure the wrap with tape to keep it snug during handling. For dishes and plates, wrap and stack them vertically, like records, for more strength. Grouping items without wrapping can cause surface scratches or complete breakage, even during short moves.

Cushion the Bottom & Top

Think of cushioning as your first and last line of defense. Start every fragile box with at least two inches of soft padding at the bottom. Bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or crumpled paper work well. Once the items are placed inside, repeat the process on top before sealing the box. This protects your contents from sudden jolts, stacked pressure, or unexpected tipping in the truck.

Don’t Leave Empty Space

Fragile items are safest when they don’t move at all. After you place your wrapped items in the box, fill any gaps with soft filler. You can use packing paper, towels, or foam peanuts, anything to create a snug fit. Boxes that rattle or shift are much more likely to result in damage during transport. A properly packed box should feel solid when gently shaken.

Label Boxes Clearly

Clear labeling isn’t just about organization. It also helps protect your stuff! Mark every side of the box with “Fragile” and “This Side Up” using a bold marker or pre-printed labels. This communicates to your movers and helpers that extra care is needed. You can also color-code your boxes by room to speed up unloading and unpacking.

Keep High-Value Fragile Items With You

For delicate or irreplaceable belongings like heirlooms, jewelry, or expensive electronics, it’s best to move them yourself when possible. Use small padded containers or personal storage totes and keep them in your vehicle. If that’s not feasible, let your moving team know which boxes contain these valuables so they receive added attention during loading and placement.
